This is just a quick note regarding the latest update for Mathinik which is currently stuck in Apple’s ‘Waiting for Review’ queue.
Developing for Apple is really a double edged sword. They do care about quality, which means that a human always has to test the app before a release. However, when wanting to quickly push out a bug-fix you still have to painstakingly wait for a reviewer to become available.
We are currently 11 days in with no sign of completion.
A week ago Mathinik was released to the public for the first time. Many lessons have been learnt from this little exercise:
Without a proper marketing campaign the app will quickly fall down the ranks in the App Store.
Don’t assume that people will even spend a penny on the app unless they know for sure what they are buying.
As an indie developer, the best option would be to release a free or “lite” version of the app which can either be financed by iAd banners or in-app purchases.
Pay special attention to the keyword optimization which in itself is a science.
Mathinik pretty much failed on all points which is why the Mathinik Free version will soon be available for selected TestFlight users. 🙂
Even though Mathinik will never be the next “Flappy Bird”, I had lot fun making it and I have a learnt a lot along the way. There will still be some updates coming for both versions in the form of bug-fixes and general improvements so stay tuned for more news.
